The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has granted approval for the final alignment of the highly awaited Jalori Tunnel in Himachal Pradesh's Kullu district.

Following the finalisation of the alignment, a Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be prepared, and the land acquisition process will commence.

The tunnel is expected to significantly improve connectivity, stimulate the local economy, and ensure greater safety for both residents and tourists.

The construction of the Jalori Tunnel is set to reduce the distance between Khanag and Ghiyagi by 8 kilometers and will ensure year-round connectivity.

Currently, the closure of Jalori Pass during winter months isolates 71 panchayats of Kullu district from the district headquarters.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari had promised the construction of the Jalori Tunnel during a public gathering in Ani ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

Subsequently, the alignment report submitted by the state government received approval from the ministry.

“This tunnel will help improve connectivity,” stated Vikramaditya Singh while expressing gratitude to the Union Ministry for fast-tracking the project, Hindustan Times reported.

Former chief minister and Leader of the Opposition Jai Ram Thakur welcomed the approval of the Jalori Tunnel alignment, emphasising its focus on addressing the development priorities of Himachal Pradesh.

“The announcement of the tunnel by Nitin Gadkari reflects the BJP’s commitment to timely execution of its promises”, he added while targeting chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu for “taking credit”.

Banjar MLA Surender Shourie said that the people of Banjar and Ani Saraj have been waiting for the construction of this tunnel for years.
