The Central government has reduced the prices of diesel and petrol by Rs 2, Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has said.
The announcement comes weeks ahead of the Lok Sabha elections slated to be held in April-May.
"By reducing the prices of petrol and diesel by Rs 2, the country's illustrious Prime Minister Modi has once again proved that the welfare and convenience of his family of crores of Indians is always his goal," the minister said.
"Similarly, comparing diesel prices, if the average in India is Rs 87 per liter, then in Italy it is Rs 163.21, which is 88 per cent higher; in France, Rs 161.57, 86 per cent higher; in Germany, Rs 155.68, 79 per cent higher; and in Spain, Rs 138.07, 59 per cent higher!," the minister added.
In an apparent attack on Rahul Gandhi and the Congress government in Telangana, the minister said, "Those who constantly criticise Modi Ji, speak ill of India abroad, and falsely pretend to care for the poor, are still selling petrol at Rs 15 more. They should hang their heads in shame".
