The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has floated the tender for the much-awaited Jorhat-Majuli bridge over Brahmputra river, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Thursday (22 May).

The 6.81-km-long two-lane bridge will be built at an estimated cost of Rs 600.51 crore.

Sarma had reportedly been consistently urging the ministry to speed up the tendering process for the strategic project.

He conveyed his thanks to Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari for transforming the long-standing vision into a tangible initiative.

“My heartfelt gratitude to Hon’ble Union Minister Nitin Gadkari Ji for making this effort into a reality,” he added.

The bridge, a long-pending demand of Majuli’s residents, was originally launched in 2021. Work stalled in 2024 when UP State Bridge Corporation Ltd., the original contractor, reportedly abandoned the project and finally withdrew from it after spending Rs 192.50 crore.
