Centre Greenlights Major Road Upgrades Across Tamil Nadu Districts—What You Need To Know

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari announced on Friday (3 January) the approval of Rs 88.9 crore for multiple road infrastructure projects in Tamil Nadu.

The projects, sanctioned under the Central Road and Infrastructure Fund (CRIF), aim to enhance connectivity, ensure safer transit, and bolster regional economic growth across several districts in the state.

Details of Sanctioned Projects:

  1. Erode District

  • Project: Widening SH-20 into a dual two-lane divided carriageway with paved shoulders.

  • Features: Includes stormwater drains and a high-level bridge.

  • Length: 2.9 km.

  • Budget Sanctioned: Rs 36.45 crore.

  • Tiruppur District

    • Project: Widening Mettukadai–Moothampalayam Road to an intermediate lane.

  • Features: Includes curve improvements, culvert reconstruction, and retaining wall construction.

  • Length: 4.2 km.

  • Budget Sanctioned: Rs 6.84 crore.

  • Madurai District

    • Project: Widening and strengthening SH-154 from double lane (DL) to double lane with paved shoulders (DLPS).


  • Length: 6 km.

  • Budget Sanctioned: Rs 18.29 crore.

  • Thanjavur & Trichy Districts

    • Project: Widening Mehalathur–Pathalapettai road from single to two-lane and intermediate to two-lane standards.

  • Length: 9.4 km.

  • Budget: Rs 20.52 crore.

  • Dindigul District

    • Project: Widening and strengthening Dharmathupatti–Adalur–Thandikudi Road.

  • Features: Includes culvert reconstruction and retaining wall construction.

  • Length: 4.4 km.

  • Budget: Rs 5.8 crore.

  • Gadkari said that these projects will boost economic activity in the region.

    "Allocated under CRIF, these infrastructure projects will significantly boost regional economic activity, improve transportation efficiency, reduce travel time, enhance road safety, and create opportunities for socio-economic growth across the state of Tamil Nadu," he said.
