Centre Sets Ball Rolling For Rs 70,000 Crore Indo-German Submarine Deal Under Project 75I

The Centre has cleared negotiations for building six advanced submarines in India with German collaboration under Project 75 India, a deal worth Rs 70,000 crore, reported The Times Of India.

The defence ministry and state-run Mazagaon Dockyards Limited (MDL) will soon begin talks with Germany’s ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, according to defence officials quoted by news agency ANI.

Negotiations would likely begin by the end of this month and the contract could be finalised within six months.

The decision comes after a high-level meeting of top defence and national security officials reviewed India’s submarine programme and future fleet needs.

The proposed submarines will include Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) systems, allowing them to remain submerged for up to three weeks. This capability will significantly strengthen the Indian Navy.

The decision was made following a high-level conference of key defence and national security officials who discussed India's submarine programs and future fleet requirements.

The Navy plans to replace nearly 10 ageing submarines in the next decade while simultaneously pursuing nuclear submarine projects.

Larsen & Toubro, in partnership with the Submarine Building Centre, is already developing two nuclear attack submarines.
