Chennai’s metro commuters are set to benefit from improved last-mile connectivity, with the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) preparing to introduce 220 new air-conditioned electric micro-buses.

The initiative aims to connect residential and commercial hubs with metro stations across the city, reducing dependence on private vehicles and offering a more comfortable, eco-friendly travel option, as per a Times of India report.

A stakeholder meeting involving MTC, Chennai Metro Rail Ltd (CMRL), Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA), and industry representatives is scheduled for 3 November to finalise route integration, charging infrastructure, and implementation timelines.

At present, MTC runs 22 small buses across 11 routes to serve metro passengers.

“When CMRL asked for more buses for last-mile connectivity, we could not withdraw from the existing fleet strength of 200 buses as it would affect our operations. Hence, we decided to float tenders for the 220 new buses that will be 5m-6m long,” T Prabhushankar, MTC’s managing director was quoted as saying.

The new fleet will link all 41 metro stations with nearby neighbourhoods within a 5 km radius. The services will be aligned with metro train schedules to ensure seamless transfers.

According to CUMTA officials, the air-conditioned buses will be trackable and bookable through the Chennai One app, which will also display real-time timings.
