Chennai’s Solar-Powered Ropeway Along Marina Beach Set To Take Off Soon

Chennai Commissioner J Kumaragurubaran recently informed the city council that the solar-powered rope car project along Chennai’s famed Marina Beach is finally inching toward implementation, with tenders for construction likely to be floated soon.

The update followed a query raised by Ward 104 councillor T V Semmozhi, who originally proposed the idea in 2022.

Semmozhi said the rope car would not only give visitors a spectacular aerial view of the Marina coastline but would also significantly boost tourism in Chennai.

Planned by the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC), the ropeway will stretch for about five km, running from Anna Square to the Light House.

The ropeway will include stations at Anna Square, Kannagi Statue, Vivekananda House, and Light House, serving as both a tourist attraction and a potential commuting alternative.

Given that Kamarajar Salai houses key government offices and educational institutions such as Queen Mary’s College and the University of Madras, it is believed the ropeway could benefit both tourists and daily commuters alike.
