The security forces neutralised two Naxalites during an encounter in Chhattisgarh’s Sukma district on Saturday (1 March).

The exchange of fire erupted in the morning in a forest under the Kistaram police station area, where a joint team of security personnel was out on an anti-Naxalite operation, news agency PTI reported citing Sukma Superintendent of Police Kiran Chavan.

According to Chavan, personnel from the District Reserve Guard (DRG) and CoBRA (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action — an elite unit of the CRPF) are involved in the operation launched on Friday based on inputs about the presence of Maoists in the area.

This latest encounter brings the total number of Naxalites killed in separate clashes across Chhattisgarh this year to 83.

Of these, 67 were eliminated in the Bastar division, which encompasses seven districts, including Sukma.
