Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Monday (16 June) announced a one-time financial assistance of Rs 8000 for each Tamil-origin family affected by the recent demolition of Madrasi Camp in Jangpura, Delhi. Additionally, each family will receive a package of essential commodities worth Rs 4000, including rice, wheat, sugar, and cooking oil.

The announcement comes in the wake of a court-mandated demolition drive that has left hundreds of families homeless. According to a report by ETV Bharat, the Tamil Nadu state government has allocated Rs 50 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Public Relief Fund to implement the relief package, aimed at supporting the over 370 displaced Tamil families.

However, several displaced residents have reported that they are yet to receive alternative housing and in response, Stalin had earlier written to Gupta, urging her to fast-track the handover of 189 EWS flats, improve community infrastructure, and provide dedicated transport services for the affected families.

The Tamil Nadu government’s announcement seeks to provide immediate relief, even as calls continue for a long-term rehabilitation plan for all the displaced residents.
