The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has begun safety certification trials on its Phase 2 network, with tests now underway along the 1A stretch from Poonamallee Bypass to Porur Junction.
The trials, conducted by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) under the Ministry of Railways, form part of the mandatory technical clearance process required before passenger operations can begin.
The testing phase, which commenced on 16 August, is expected to last about two weeks.
During this period, trains are being assessed for passenger ride comfort at speeds of up to 90 kmph, alongside evaluations of traction and braking systems as well as track performance.
The safety runs were overseen by MA Siddique, Managing Director of CMRL, along with other directors and senior officials including Chief General Manager AR Rajendran. General consultants attached to the project were also present during the trials.
“Successful completion of these tests will ensure that the new corridor and rolling stock are complying with the safety standards, to ensure passenger safety, before being opened to the public," stated the CMRL press note.
Siddique described the milestone as an important step forward, “We reaffirm our commitment to meeting the highest standards of safety and reliability. With steady progress, we are moving closer to commissioning the project for the benefit of the public.”
