News Brief
Congress leader Supriya Shrinate
Ahead of the Lok Sabha election 2024, the Congress party has dropped the name of its social media department head, Supriya Shrinate, from its candidate list amid the outrage over her controversial social media post against actor-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut.
Shrinate had contested the last Lok Sabha polls from Maharajganj in Uttar Pradesh in 2019 but lost to BJP's Pankaj Chaudhary.
Her name was missing from the eighth list released by the Congress on Wednesday.
This time, Congress has fielded Virendra Chaudhary from Maharajganj, dropping Shrinate, who is caught in a massive political controversy over her now-deleted social media post on Kangana Ranaut, who is BJP's Lok Sabha candidate from Himachal's Mandi parliamentary constituency.
On Monday, an offensive post was put out from Shrinate's Instagram account with a picture of Ranaut and a derogatory caption.
"As soon as I came to know, I deleted that post. Everyone who knows me, also knows very well that I can never make personal and indecent comments towards any woman. I wanted to know how this happened," Shrinate said.
On Wednesday, the Election Commission issued a show-cause notice to Shrinate over her post.
The Congress announced its eighth list on Wednesday for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, naming 14 candidates for four states - Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, and Jharkhand.
