In a recent development, Abhishek Manu Singhvi, a senior Congress leader, has moved the Himachal Pradesh High Court, challenging the outcome of the recent Rajya Sabha election in the hill state.

Singhvi filed an application in the state's high court, contesting the interpretation of draw of lots rules by the election officer, which led to his defeat in the poll.

Earlier, in the closely contested election held on 27 February, BJP nominee Harsh Mahajan emerged victorious through a draw of lots after both the candidates secured 34 votes each.

Singhvi mentioned that there is no legal provision mandating that the person whose name is drawn in the draw of lots should be considered the loser.

Singhvi argued that the current interpretation of the draw of lots procedure defies common sense and traditional practices observed globally in tie-breaking scenarios.

He expressed confidence that if his contentions are upheld by the high court, the declared election result would be deemed incorrect.

Subsequently, the Congress party in Himachal Pradesh faced internal turmoil following the setback in the Rajya Sabha election.
