Congress on Sunday (12 January), announced its third major promise ahead of the Delhi Assembly election, scheduled for 5 February. It pledged to provide Rs 8,500 per month to educated unemployed youth in Delhi for one year under the ‘Yuva Udaan Yojana’ (Youth Apprenticeship Scheme) if voted to power.

Making the announcement at a press conference, AICC General Secretary Sachin Pilot criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for neglecting the youth over the past 11 years.

He said that both the BJP and the AAP totally ignored the youth in the past 11 years, when they were busy building the Raj Mahal and Sheesh Mahal, respectively.

Pilot emphasised that the Congress is committed to fulfilling its guarantees, citing the trust people have in Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and senior leader Rahul Gandhi.

Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee President Devender Yadav highlighted that the announcement was made on National Youth Day, marking Swami Vivekananda’s birth anniversary.

“Due to the neglect of the youth by the BJP and AAP, the unemployment rate has hit the skies, with the youth taking to liquor and drugs. The Congress stipend will channelise the skills of the youth towards constructive work and give direction to their lives, as in the past 11 years, people only witnessed monopoly, price rise and corruption, but no jobs,” Yadav said.

This is the third poll promise made by the Congress. On 6 January, it announced the ‘Pyaari Didi Yojana’, offering Rs 2,500 per month for women, and on 8 January, it unveiled the ‘Jeevan Raksha Yojana’, promising free health insurance of up to Rs 25 lakh for Delhi residents.
