Priyanka Gandhi Vadra during her Maiden Speech in Lok Sabha
In her maiden speech in the Lok Sabha during the debate on the Constitution, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra criticised the government over alleged attempts to undermine the Constitution.
Attacking BJP, the Congress leader said that Constitution is a 'suraksha kavach (protective shield)' but the "ruling party has made all attempts to break it".
Gandhi pointed to the reduced numbers of the BJP in Lok Sabha elections as forcing them to talk about the Constitution more often.
Further she said, had the Lok Sabha elections not gone the way it did, BJP would have started working on amending the Constitution.
The two-day debate in the Lok Sabha, commemorating the 75th anniversary of India’s adoption of the Constitution, saw Priyanka attacking PM Modi too.
Hitting out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, she said the PM doesn't understand "Bharat ka Samvidhan" but "Sangh ka Vidhan".
She reiterated her party's demand for a nationwide caste census, emphasising the need to understand the "condition of everyone" to formulate inclusive policies.
"When the entire opposition called for a caste-based census, they talked about cattle and 'mangalsutra' getting stolen," she remarked.
Gandhi also targeted the government over the Adani issue, accusing it of avoiding a debate in Parliament on the US allegations against the industrialist.
She claimed the Modi government prioritised big business interests over the common people, alleging, "The ruling dispensation has sold everything to them. The country is watching 1.4 billion people being ignored to save one person, with all wealth, ports, roads, and mines being given to him."
Further, Gandhi suggested holding a ballot to resolve ongoing political debates, saying, "Conduct elections through a ballot, and the truth will be revealed."
