The district administration in Maharashtra's Jalgaon district on Wednesday (1 January) morning imposed a 24-hour curfew in Paladhi village.

The measure comes hours after a clash between two groups belonging to different communities led to arson and vandalism in the area.

“Curfew was imposed as a preventive measure. The situation is peaceful and under control,” Ayush Prasad, district collector, was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.

The clashes began at around 9.30 pm on Tuesday and several shops were set on fire and vehicles were damaged.

The curfew, enforced at 3.00 am on Wednesday, remains in effect.

"As of now, the situation is peaceful, and nothing untoward has been reported this morning," Prasad added.

According to a senior police official cited in a PTI report, seven persons have been arrested so far as several shops were set on fire and public property was damaged during the violence at the village.
