Kandla Port
The Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) has unveiled an expansive infrastructure blueprint exceeding Rs 57,000 crore, aimed at turning Kandla into a global shipbuilding and green fuel innovation hub, according to Hindustan Times report.
Celebrating a record-breaking cargo throughput of 150.16 million metric tonnes (MMT) in FY 2024–25, the highest in its history, DPA Chairman Sushil Kumar Singh announced the port’s ambition to touch 170 MMT by next year.
“This achievement is not just a number—it reflects the strength of our partnerships, the dedication of our people, and the limitless potential of DPA,” he said.
Central to the expansion is a Rs 30,000 crore mega shipbuilding complex spread over 6,000 acres.
“The facility will include a marina, fishing harbour, integrated townships, and a marine industrial cluster... will have the capacity to produce 32 new ships and repair 50 old ships every year,” Singh said, underlining plans to construct VLCCs and make it one of Asia’s largest shipbuilding ecosystems.
“This will allow Kandla to be converted into liquid jetties, improving the waiting time of liquid tanker vessels and enhancing the turnaround time of liquid vessels,” Singh added.
DPA also plans three new oil jetties, a Single Buoy Mooring, and two product jetties at Vadinar, which will add 35 MTPA of liquid cargo capacity.
Committed to “Viksit Bharat 2047,” DPA is also aligning with India’s Green Hydrogen Mission. Minister Sarbananda Sonowal recently flagged off a 1-MW electrolyser at Kandla, the first of its kind in India manufactured by L&T, which will be scaled up to 10 MW.
With initiatives like ‘Berthing on Arrival’ to eliminate vessel delays, DPA is not just expanding its capacity but reimagining efficiency and sustainability in Indian shipping.
