The Philippine Army is in advance discussions with India's BrahMos Aerospace to procure additional coastal batteries of the BrahMos anti-ship missile under the Integrated Shore-Based Anti-Ship Missile System (ISBASMS) Acquisition Project, IDRW reported.
This initiative marks an expansion from the earlier Land-Based Anti-Ship Missile System project, with plans now focusing on acquiring nine missile batteries, a significant scale-up from the initial two batteries.
The Philippines received its first batch of BrahMos missiles in April 2024 as part of a $375 million agreement signed in 2022. This delivery included missiles, mobile launchers mounted on Tatra 6x6 vehicles, and an Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) package tailored for the tropical conditions of the region.
To ensure operational readiness, the Philippine Marine Corps personnel have undergone extensive training in the operation and maintenance of the BrahMos systems, which are now managed by the Marine Corps’ Coastal Defense Regiment. This acquisition strengthens the Philippines' maritime defense, especially amid escalating territorial disputes in the South China Sea.
The BrahMos missile, capable of speeds up to Mach 2.8 and known for its precision, provides a critical defensive edge, enhancing deterrence along the Philippines' vulnerable coastal regions. This strategic move underscores the nation's commitment to bolstering its maritime security framework.
