A Delhi court today (12 July) granted conditional bail to Jaffer Sadiq, an alleged drug kingpin from Tamil Nadu.

Sadiq, arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) for smuggling pseudoephedrine to Australia and New Zealand, was asked to furnish a personal bond of Rs 1 lakh with two sureties of the same amount.

He has been told to deposit his passport and report to the NCB office monthly. To prevent him from leaving the country, a Look Out Circular will be issued.

Sadiq is an expelled Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) functionary. He was the deputy organiser of the DMK's NRI wing in the Chennai West area.

The NCB began a probe following specific information from the New Zealand customs authorities and the Australian cops that large quantities of pseudoephedrine, concealed in desiccated coconut powder, were being sent to both countries from India.

Following a raid on a godown in Delhi, the police arrested three operatives of the drug racket. The trio admitted that they had sent 45 consignments of drugs, weighing 3,500 kg and worth Rs 2,000 crore, in the past three years.

The revelation caused huge embarrassment for the ruling DMK regime as Sadiq appeared to be enjoying proximity and access to top echelons of party leadership.
