The Congress party on Monday (6 January), unveiled the 'Pyaari Didi' Yojana, pledging Rs 2,500 monthly financial assistance to every woman in Delhi if elected to power in the upcoming Assembly elections.
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar launched the scheme, and expressed optimism about Congress’s prospects in the polls.
"We will implement this scheme as soon as we form the government, and Rs 2,500 will be given to women, just like we did in Karnataka," Shivakumar stated, referring to a similar initiative introduced in his home state.
The announcement was made in the presence of Delhi Congress chief Devender Yadav, the party’s Delhi in-charge Qazi Nizamuddin, and other senior leaders.
The move is seen as an effort to appeal to women voters, a key demographic in the upcoming elections.
Kejriwal has proposed increasing the monthly aid for women from Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,100, but clarified that the funds would only be disbursed after the elections.
AAP’s scheme targets women above 18 years who are registered voters in Delhi, with certain exclusions, such as permanent government employees, Members of Parliament, MLAs, and income tax payers.
According to AAP, the initiative is expected to benefit over 22 lakh women in the capital.
