The Delhi government has issued a directive to schools, instructing them to prevent the enrolment of "illegal Bangladeshi migrant" children and report any doubts about a student’s citizenship status to the police and relevant authorities.
The circular, signed by Deputy Director of Education (Schools) Sanjay Subhas Kumar, mandates strict verification of documentation during the admission process.
Addressed to heads of government, government-aided, and private unaided schools, it states, “Schools must ensure strict admission procedures, verification of students’ documentation to prevent illegal Bangladeshi migrants’ enrolment, implementation of greater scrutiny to detect and prevent unauthorised admissions of illegal Bangladeshi migrants in particular.”
The directive does not specify the documents required to prove legal residency but emphasizes careful verification. Deputy Directors of Education (district and zones) are to submit weekly reports on cases where citizenship status remains unverified.
“Today, the Education Department of the Delhi Government has passed a strict order that no Rohingya should be given admission in the government schools of Delhi. We will not let the rights of the people of Delhi be taken away,” she added.
Former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal echoed this, stating, “We will not allow BJP to settle Rohingya in Delhi under any circumstances. We will not allow them to give the flats, employment, and facilities of the poor of Delhi to the Rohingya under any circumstance.”
Education officials have informed schools to prioritize Aadhaar cards and voter ID cards for verification. The directive follows similar measures by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and instructions from LG V K Saxena to identify illegal Bangladeshi immigrants.
