Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway Set For Long-Overdue Revamp After 16 Years, NHAI To Float Tenders or 28-Km-Stretch

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has allocated Rs 245 crore for a comprehensive renovation of the 28 km Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway, a vital intercity corridor that links two of NCR’s busiest hubs, TOI reported.

The project, which stretches from Rao Tula Ram Marg in Delhi to Kherki Daula in Gurgaon, will include the recarpeting of carriageways and service lanes.

According to NHAI officials, tenders will be floated within the next few days, and the execution period is estimated at two years once work commences.

Part of National Highway 8 (Delhi-Jaipur route), the expressway is among India’s most congested stretches, logging an average daily ridership of around 3 lakh passenger cars, more than double its designed capacity.

“The expressway has outlived its capacity. We have decided to carry out the necessary upgrades,” said an NHAI official.

Safety infrastructure will also see an upgrade, with metal crash barriers being replaced by concrete ones to better withstand impacts. Signage, road markings, and lighting, upgraded to a minimum of 40 lux will be improved to enhance overall commute safety.

Problematic zones like the Narsinghpur service road, which frequently floods during the monsoon, will be rebuilt using ready-mix concrete (RMC).

“While GMDA has been working on a permanent solution for waterlogging at Narsinghpur, we will construct the service roads with RMC to eliminate the need for frequent road repairs,” said the official.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari had earlier acknowledged commuters’ monsoon woes and promised permanent relief from traffic jams on the expressway.
