In a significant milestone for the Delhi-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) project, a 220-tonne steel span was successfully installed on the Barapula flyover near Sarai Kale Khan, India Today reported.

This structure is a key part of the viaduct that will link the Sarai Kale Khan station to the Jangpura stabling yard.

The span, made up of four steel girders weighing 50 tonnes each and measuring around 40 metres in length, was installed using three high-capacity cranes in a carefully planned two-stage lifting operation carried out overnight. 

The span crosses several existing structures, including the Ring Road, the Barapula flyover, and a drain below, making the installation particularly complex.

Due to the challenging location, between a high-tension power line and key road infrastructure, NCRTC coordinated with Delhi Transco Limited to arrange an alternate power supply for the 220 kV line during the operation.

The girders were initially placed on the flyover and then hoisted onto the viaduct pillars from both sides with precision.

NCRTC executed the task in collaboration with the Public Works Department (PWD), Delhi Traffic Police, and other local authorities, following all safety protocols.

This installation marks a major step forward in the development of the RRTS corridor.

The Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut line, being developed at a cost of over Rs 30,000 crore, is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2025.

Once completed, it will significantly reduce travel time between Delhi and Meerut to under an hour, passing through key urban centres such as Ghaziabad, Muradnagar and Modinagar.
