The Delhi Public Works Department (PWD) is planning to construct either a flyover or an underpass above the existing Yudhister Setu, roughly 100 metres from the exit of Kashmere Gate ISBT leading to the Metcalfe House traffic signal on Ring Road, reported Indian Express.
“Currently, the Ring Road stretch — starting from Margat Wale Baba Hanuman temple, Kashmere Gate ISBT and near Metcalfe House — sees heavy traffic jams. The stretch has become a major choke point due to the frequent movement of interstate buses and this road also sees heavy pedestrian movement…To address this issue, the department is planning an elevated corridor or underpass for buses near the ISBT exit terminal,” a senior PWD official was quoted as saying in the report.
The official explained that the infrastructure intervention would allow buses and other vehicles that do not need to enter the ISBT to bypass the congested area, thereby reducing delays.
The area near Gate 1 of the ISBT is notorious for snarls even during non-peak hours, exacerbated by high pedestrian movement and making it one of Delhi’s accident-prone zones.
Additionally, the department has proposed a six-lane, 680 metre long flyover at Metcalfe junction, stretching from Civil Lines Trauma Centre to the DRDO office, at an estimated cost of Rs 183 crore.
Officials said the elevated corridor would ensure smoother traffic for Civil Lines residents and streamline interstate movement towards northern states like Himachal Pradesh and Punjab, offering much-needed relief to thousands of daily commuters.
