Delhi will see the addition of 401 new nine-metre electric buses to its public transport fleet by mid-June under the Delhi Electric Vehicle Initiative (DEVI), PTI reported.

Delhi Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh confirmed the development, stating, "To support the people of Delhi and improve the city’s transport while contributing to a cleaner environment, we are committed to increasing the number of electric buses as promised."

The new electric buses are scheduled to be launched between 10 and 15 June and are part of the city’s broader plan to enhance sustainable urban transport.

Singh further noted that the number of electric buses would continue to increase in the coming months.

The DEVI buses are designed with commuter safety and convenience in mind. They are equipped with CCTV cameras, live tracking systems, panic buttons, and motorised ramps to aid passengers with disabilities.

Earlier this month, 400 DEVI buses were formally launched by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, as part of the city’s ongoing push towards a greener transport system.

As of now, Delhi boasts a fleet of 1,895 electric buses, with around 1,800 under the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and 400 operating under the Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System (DIMTS)-Cluster scheme.

Chief Minister Gupta, during her recent budget speech, announced plans to enhance Delhi’s urban transport infrastructure with the help of central funding.

"Around 5,500 buses will be maintained by the end of this year, and 11,000 buses will be on the roads by 2026. Bus routes will also be reevaluated to address loopholes in the system," she stated.
