In a major infrastructure announcement, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Wednesday unveiled a Rs 24000-crore road and transport overhaul aimed at easing congestion and pollution in the Capital.
The announcement was made following a high-level meeting chaired by Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari.
According to a report by The Indian Express, the plan includes the transfer of key arterial roads — Rohtak Road (Punjabi Bagh to Nangloi), Ashram to Badarpur stretch, and MG Road — to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), which will upgrade them into signal-free corridors.
These roads will be equipped with comprehensive supporting infrastructure, including drainage systems, side lanes, and real-time traffic monitoring.
“Earlier, multiple agencies led to fragmented execution and chronic waterlogging. Now, NHAI will be the single-point authority, with support from the Delhi Public Works Department,” she said.
Among the key infrastructure initiatives are a 7-km underground tunnel from Shiv Murti to Nelson Mandela Road, an elevated road from INA to the airport with future extensions to Faridabad and Gurgaon, and extensions of the Urban Extension Road-II up to Tronica City and the Delhi–Dehradun route.
Additionally, a 20-km link road from Inderlok Metro Station along the Munak Canal to Sonipat has been proposed to relieve pressure from Mukarba Chowk and ease intercity traffic between Delhi and Haryana.
The NHAI is currently executing Rs 35,000 crore worth of transport projects in Delhi and has completed Rs 64,000 crore in previous works, covering over 1,500 km of roads.
Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for upcoming projects worth Rs 24000 crore — spanning 128 km — have also been prepared and await rollout.
Additionally, Rs 150 crore has been sanctioned for the construction of Road Over Bridges and Under Bridges to ease bottlenecks near railway crossings.
Gupta credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Minister Gadkari, calling the Centre’s Rs 1.25 lakh crore commitment “unparalleled.”
