The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) is preparing to roll out electric boat services on the Yamuna in the near future.

Construction of two jetties at Sonia Vihar has been awarded by IWT, while the Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation (DTTDC) has selected the operator to manage the cruise operations, reported Times of India.

The project covers a 4 km route between Sonia Vihar and Jagatpur, where the river has cleaner and enough water for the boats to navigate easily.

Two 50 seater jetties will be built using container-based structures to comply with National Green Tribunal regulations prohibiting permanent concrete construction near water bodies.

“The LG was informed that two jetties, each with a capacity of 50 passengers, will be launched at Sonia Vihar... in Dec this year,” an official was quoted as saying by ToI.

Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena reportedly recently reviewed progress with officials from IWAI, DTTDC, the Delhi Jal Board, and other stakeholders.

IWAI has received all necessary environmental permissions and will oversee land development for boat maintenance as well.

To enrich the experience, a musical projection show on the river is planned, celebrating Delhi’s history, Indian dance forms, and the cultural significance of the Yamuna.

“This initiative marks a pivotal moment for Delhi's tourism sector, promising to enhance the recreational landscape of the city while adhering to environmental standards,” the official noted.

An MoU was signed in March bringing all departments under one framework, enabling the cruise plan.
