The Tamil Nadu Assembly on Wednesday (26 June) passed a resolution unanimously to urge the Centre to conduct a nationwide caste-based census citing its need in formulating policies.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin led the resolution saying that Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led union government should start the census which due since 2021 along with the caste census.
The House considered caste-based population census "essential to formulate policies in order to ensure equal rights and equal opportunities in education, economy and employment to every citizen of India."
This has been the case with Bihar also, where the party's state unit supports caste census. Bihar BJP president Samrat Choudhary has even pledged to approach the Supreme Court against Patna High Court's decision against increased reservation.
Meanwhile, the main opposition All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) legislators were not present in the House due to suspension over disrupting proceedings.
As per the Economic Times, Speaker M Appavu said the resolution was adopted unanimously.
