Former Union Minister and Congress' Lok Sabha candidate from Chandigarh Manish Tewari has said that his party will not allow "chaebol’s and oligarchies" to flourish in India.

Further, in an apparent admission of Congress' wealth redistribution strategy, the former Information and Broadcasting Minister in UPA government asserted that India will become great only when wealth is distributed evenly.

A chaebol is a large industrial South Korean conglomerate run and controlled by an individual or family, and often consists of multiple diversified affiliates, controlled by a person or group.

Several dozen large South Korean family-controlled corporate groups fall under this definition

While the founding families do not necessarily own majority stakes in the companies, the descendants of the founders often retain control by virtue of long association with the businesses.

In response to a question by political analyst Tushar Gupta to explain Congress manifesto's promise of addressing "growing inequality of wealth and income" through "suitable changes in policies", Tewari wrote, "Absolutely we will not allow chaebol’s and oligarchies to flourish . We will not allow 1% of Indians to hold 77% of India’s wealth".

Earlier last month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had launched an attack on the Congress party over its manifesto, saying the party has promised a survey of property including gold, silver and land among other things.

"Congress has promised that gold and other property will be equally redistributed. Do you accept this? Does government have a right to take away your property?" Modi questioned.

Accusing the Congress of being in the yoke of Urban Naxals and Leftists, Modi said that gold for Indian women is not just a show-off but connected to their self-respect.

"Mangalsootra is not an issue of gold or its price, it is linked to her dreams. Are you talking about snatching it in your manifesto?," Modi said recalling Congress' earlier statement that Muslims have the first right on the country's resources.

He linked this statement to Congress' manifesto and said, "This means that they will collect your assets and distribute to those who have more children."
