In a latest development, Germany has altered its stance following India's summoning of a senior German diplomat over comments made by the German government regarding the arrest of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

As reported by NDTV, a spokesperson from the German foreign office expressed confidence in the Indian Constitution on Wednesday (27 March), asserting that it guarantees fundamental human values and freedoms.

The spokesperson highlighted the shared democratic values between India and Germany and emphasized the importance of closer cooperation between the two nations in an atmosphere of trust.

The change in tone comes after Sebastian Fischer, another German foreign office spokesperson, had previously remarked on Mr. Kejriwal's arrest, calling for basic democratic principles to be upheld and emphasizing the importance of a fair and impartial trial.

India's Ministry of External Affairs had denounced the remarks as undermining the independence of its judiciary and reiterated the country's commitment to the rule of law.

The diplomatic tension escalated further as India also summoned a senior US diplomat over similar remarks made by the US State Department regarding Arvind Kejriwal's arrest.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had earlier taken Arvind Kejriwal into custody, alleging misuse of bribe money from the policy for funding political campaigns.
