The first National Metro Rail Knowledge Centre is in the process of development in New Delhi.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has awarded the contract, for the design and construction of the facility, to GA Infra Private Limited.
The centre will be constructed under a Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) model at an estimated cost of Rs 46 crore and will be situated at the Vishwavidyalaya Metro Station in Delhi.
The DMRC already runs a metro museum at the Patel Chowk station in Delhi, where it has on display, equipment and models attempting to document the journey of the Delhi Metro from an 8 km network in 2002 to about 390 km across Delhi, in 2021.
The National Metro Rail Knowledge Centre has been proposed to showcase the growth of the metro networks and transit system in various cities throughout India.
The facility has been planned to act as a centre for knowledge and innovation in the Indian Metro rail systems. It will provide all stakeholders a forum for communication and cooperation.
With numerous new metro projects being inaugurated around the nation, the metro rail industry has experienced substantial expansion in India.
The introduction of new technologies and variants of the metro have supported a successful integration of the metro in the overall transport ecosystems of many small and large cities in India.
This will be an essential facility and act as a hub of resources for the metro’s growth story.
The purpose of the centre is to disseminate knowledge on construction, operation facilities and latest developments, to the stakeholders, and for better awareness of the citizens. It will give provide a venue to connect and exchange best practices, breakthroughs and experiences.
Further, the centre will also serve as a platform for research and development activities. This will provide the resources required for the advancements in technologies, constructions and services of the metro systems for future growth.
It will promote initiatives to encourage technology transfer, knowledge sharing and offer training and capacity-building opportunities for metro rail personnel.
The facility will be equipped with modern training and simulation equipment, classrooms, conference facilities and research labs to provide a comprehensive platform for learning and development.
