Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey has launched Bitchat, a Bluetooth-based messaging app that operates without any internet connection, enabling private, decentralised communication for iPhone users, reported Hindustan Times.
Available in beta through Apple’s TestFlight, Bitchat quickly reached its 10,000-user testing cap.
The app uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) mesh networks to let nearby smartphones form clusters that relay encrypted messages to each other.
Messages hop from one device to another, extending beyond the typical 30-metre Bluetooth range as users move. This peer-to-peer model ensures that users can send messages even in areas without Wi-Fi or cellular service.
It doesn’t require registration with a phone number or email, making communication fully anonymous.
Key features include end-to-end encryption, no internet requirement, and no central database. Messages stay confined to the mesh network.
Currently, the beta phase focuses on optimising battery use and relay stability. Developers plan to expand platform support and add Wi-Fi protocols in future releases to increase bandwidth and allow sharing of richer content like pictures and videos. Dorsey has also shared the app’s whitepaper and beta invitation publicly.
