A major search operation is in progress in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district on Thursday (3 July) to locate two to three terrorists hiding in the dense forests of the Kanzal Mandu area in the Kuchal-Chatroo belt, news agency PTI reported, citing officials.

The operation follows a gunfight that broke out on Wednesday evening (2 July) around 7.45 pm, when a joint team of the Army, CRPF, and police launched a cordon and search operation based on intelligence inputs about terrorist movement in the region.

Officials said the terrorists opened fire upon spotting the search teams, triggering an exchange of gunfire that continued into Thursday morning (3 July).

Reinforcements have been deployed, and the area is being combed with the help of drones and sniffer dogs.

The cordon has been tightened to prevent the terrorists from escaping.

As per unconfirmed reports, one terrorist is believed to have been injured in the gun battle.

Officials added that top JeM terrorists Saifullah and Adil are believed to be active in the hilly terrain of Kishtwar.

This marks the second encounter in the Jammu region within a week.

On 26 June, a JeM terrorist was killed in Udhampur’s Basantgarh area, while three others managed to escape into nearby forests.

Meanwhile, security agencies are continuing to interrogate a captured Pakistani national in a separate case, who has been identified as a terrorist guide.

The search operation in Kishtwar remains active, with security forces determined to neutralise the threat and prevent further infiltration in the region.
