Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm 'Biparjoy' Intensifies, Likely to Affect Coastal Regions of India and Pakistan

According to updates from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on June 11, the severe cyclonic storm 'Biparjoy' has intensified into an "extremely severe cyclonic storm".


As per IMD's tweet, the storm is projected to cross the Saurashtra and Kutch coasts, along with the adjoining Pakistan coasts, between Mandvi, Gujarat and Karachi, Pakistan. This is estimated to take place around noon on June 15, as a VSCS (very severe cyclonic storm).

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an advisory during the early hours of June 11th. The advisory stated that wind speeds would reach 40-50 kmph, with gusts up to 60 kmph, along and off the Saurashtra and Kutch coast.

As per the IMD advisory, the wind speeds will escalate on June 12th to 45-55 kmph, with gusts up to 65 kmph. Further, it will increase to 50-60 kmph, with gusts up to 70 kmph, from June 13th to June 14th.

Additionally, the IMD also mentioned that the sea conditions along and off the Saurashtra and Kutch coasts are likely to remain rough to very rough until June 14th. It will further escalate to very rough to high on June 15th.

The IMD has issued a warning to fishermen in the region to suspend all fishing operations until June 15th. Additionally, the IMD has advised fishermen to avoid venturing into the central and north Arabian sea between June 12th and 15th, as well as along and off the Saurashtra-Kutch coasts until June 15th.

Furthermore, the IMD has urged those who are currently at sea to return to the coast immediately and regulate their offshore and onshore activities intelligently. This cautionary measure has been put in place to ensure that everyone remains safe during this challenging time.
