Union Minister of state for Information Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar on Thursday (16 November) said that FIR can be filed against tech platforms whose AI models show bias.

The minister's remarks came after an X, formerly Twitter, user tagged the minister in a post and pointed out that Google's AI chatbot Bard refused to summarise an article by right wing portal OpIndia, saying it was from a "biased and unreliable source".

The X user further said that when asked about to list all biased and false media, Bard also Included Social Media accounts and one of them was of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"It basically calls all Conservative and Nationalist media and leaders as biased," he said.

Further, he alleged that the list of media which Bard considers biased does not include even a single liberal news media outlet.

Responding to the X user's post, Rajeev Chandrasekhar said, "Search Bias, Algorithmic Bias and AI models with bias - are real violations of the Safety & Trust obligations placed on Platforms under Rule 3(1)(b) of IT rules under regulatory framework in India".

The minister further said that users can lodge FIRs against such platforms showing bias.

"Those who are aggrieved by this can file FIRs against such platforms and safe harbor/immunity under Sec79 will not apply to these cases," he added.
