A fire broke out at Tata Electronics’ manufacturing plant near Hosur, Tamil Nadu, on Saturday (28 September).
Over 1,500 workers were said to be on-site when the fire broke out.
“There has been an unfortunate incident of fire at our plant in Hosur, Tamil Nadu. Our emergency protocols at the plant ensured that all our employees are safe. The cause of the fire is under investigation and we will take necessary actions to safeguard the interest of our employees and other stakeholders,” Tata Electronics said in a statement, Business Standard reported.
According to media reports, the fire originated in the mobile phone accessories painting unit of the company located in Uddanapalli.
Three employees reportedly showed signs of respiratory issues and were taken to a private hospital and are now stable.
This will be Tata Electronics’ second iPhone production plant, following the acquisition of Taiwanese EMS firm Wistron’s unit.
Tata Electronics has reportedly planned to invest around Rs 6,000 crore in its new iPhone assembly plant, and has pumped a similar amount into the component factory that supplies to Apple at the same location.
The combined operations at these facilities are set to employ over 50,000 blue-collar workers, primarily women.
The iPhone assembly unit alone will provide jobs for 35,000 to 40,000 employees, positioning it as one of Apple’s largest facilities in India, second only to Foxconn’s plant in Tamil Nadu.
