Formal job creation under the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) rose by 3 per cent in October 2024, with 1.78 million new employees added compared to 1.72 million in October 2023, according to provisional payroll data released by the Ministry of Labour and Employment on Wednesday.

However, on a month-on-month basis, formal jobs created under ESIC fell by 13.2 per cent, as 2.05 million jobs were added in September 2024.

The data also revealed that 21,588 new establishments were brought under the social security ambit of the ESI scheme in October, down from 23,043 establishments added in September 2024.

“Out of the total 1.78 million employees added during the month, 0.85 million employees or 47.7 per cent of the total registrations belong to the age group of up to 25 years,” the ministry stated.

A gender-wise analysis of the data showed that 0.35 million female members were registered in October 2024, while 42 transgender employees enrolled in the scheme. This highlights ESIC’s commitment to extending benefits to all sections of society, the Ministry noted.

The scheme covers employees earning up to Rs 21,000 per month, with contributions amounting to 4 per cent of wages—0.75 per cent from employees and 3.25 per cent from employers.

Registered employees and their families are entitled to medical treatment, unemployment cash benefits in specific situations, and maternity benefits for women.

In cases of employment-related disablement or death, the scheme provides disablement benefits and family pensions respectively.
