Jailed former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan has criticised Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir on Friday (23 May) for his promotion to the rank of Field Marshal.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Khan said that General Munir should have given himself the title of "king" as the country is ruled by the law of the jungle, The Free Press Journal reported.
"MashaAllah, General Asim Munir has been made Field Marshal. Though frankly, it might have been more fitting to give him the title of 'King' instead — because right now, the country is ruled by the law of the jungle. And in the jungle, there is only one king," Khan posted on X.
General Munir was promoted to the rank of Field Marshal on Tuesday (20 May), days after India hit multiple Pakistani air bases with precision strikes during the Operation Sindoor, which was launched to destroy terror infrastructure in the neighbouring country after Pakistan-backed terrorists brutally killed 26 people, mostly tourists, in a terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam.
Lodged in prison since August 2023 in connection with several cases filed against him, Khan also called rumours of any deal being made with the Pakistan army as "baseless".
"No deal has taken place, nor is any dialogue underway. These are baseless lies," Khan said in the X post.
"The country is facing external threats, a surge in terrorism, and an economic crisis. We must unite. I have never asked for anything for myself before, nor will I now," he said.
Khan also advised Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif to be ready for India's attack.
Khan also took a dig at Sharif, saying that he became PM even after having cases of corruption against him.
"The ongoing situation reflects that the very spirit of democracy is being crushed. When you send the message that the bigger the thief, the higher the office they’ll hold — you bury justice. The NAB still holds a case against (President) Asif Zardari’s sister involving five apartments registered under employees’ names. She is abroad, and no one dares question her. Shahbaz Sharif was accused in PKR 22-billion money laundering case, yet he was made Prime Minister," he said.
He alleged that during the last three years, Pakistan's constitutional framework had been destroyed.
