External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has announced the nationwide rollout of e-passports and the Passport Seva Programme (PSP) V2.0.
He shared this update on the occasion of the 13th Passport Seva Divas on 24 June.
The pilot testing for Global PSP Version 2.0 is currently underway and will be introduced in all Indian Embassies and Consulates in phases.
"In line with the Government of India's commitment to deliver next level of citizen-centric service, I am delighted to inform that we have rolled out PSP V2.0 across the country. This would leverage advanced, high-end emerging technologies. The pilot testing of Global PSP Version 2.0 is currently under progress and shall also be rolled out in a phased manner in all Indian Embassies/Consulates," Jaishankar said.
He also highlighted the significant progress in public service delivery under the "Passport Seva Programme," noting a rise from just over 91 lakh passports issued in 2014 to 1.46 crore passports in 2024.
"Another important milestone is the ongoing roll out of the e-Passport. The contactless reading of data stored in the chip facilitates the ease of travel for Indian citizens and their smoother interface with Immigration Authorities," the ministry said.
He added that the launch of mPassport Police App has substantially brought down the Police Verification time to 5-7 days in 25 States/UTs where mPassport Police App has been implemented.
In the past year, 10 new Post Office Passport Seva Kendras (POPSKs) have opened, with the 450th POPSK inaugurated in Kushinagar in April 2025, the minister said.
Mobile van facilities have extended passport services to remote areas, enabling professionals and workers to access global workplaces, according to the minister.
