T Raja Singh
T Raja Singh, a BJP leader and MLA from Hyderabad's Goshamahal constituency, voiced concerns on Sunday (8 December), about the demographic shift in Goa, particularly the rise in the Muslim population.
Speaking at an event organised by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal in Curchorem, South Goa, Singh expressed worry over the decreasing Hindu population in the coastal state. He argued, “Wherever Hindu population has decreased… conversions of Hindus has occured there.”
Singh cited a statement made by the Governor of Goa regarding the changing demographics, highlighting the increase in the Muslim population.
"I was reading a statement made by the Governor of this state. He said the percentage of Muslims in Goa, which was 3 per cent 10-15 years ago, has now risen to 12 per cent. This is something to consider and carefully think about…," Raja Singh said, emphasising the need for thoughtful reflection on these changes.
In addition to his concerns about the Muslim population, Singh also discussed the declining Christian population in Goa, which he brought up during a conversation with the Archbishop of Goa.
Further commenting on the broader demographic trend in India, Singh warned, “If the Muslim population in India continues to grow and if their MPs are 300, then which community will the Prime Minister be from? Unka hi hoga, na (from their’s, right)?… And in countries where ‘their’ Prime Minister is elected, what has been the condition of Hindus… History is witness to that.”
Singh's visit to Goa, however, has been met with opposition. The Congress party urged Goa's Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to revoke his visit, describing Singh as a divisive figure with a history of hate speech and sectarian rhetoric. Congress officials warned that Singh’s presence in Goa could incite communal tensions and harm the state’s image as a peaceful destination.
During his 48-minute speech, Singh also addressed the issue of "love jihad" and urged the Christian community to join forces with Hindus in combating the alleged threat.
In a dramatic display, Singh tore a Bangladesh flag on stage and declared, “Whoever comes up against India will suffer the same fate.” He also brandished a sword, saying, “This sword is not just to be kept in its sheath. This should be in the home of every Hindu.”
