The Government e-Marketplace (GeM) has achieved a Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) of Rs 4.09 lakh crore as of 23 January 2025, surpassing the previous fiscal year’s total GMV of Rs 4 lakh crore within just 10 months.
This marks a significant 50 per cent growth compared to the same period last year, highlighting its increasing role in public procurement.
The services segment contributed Rs 2.54 lakh crore, which accounts for 62 per cent of the total GMV, while the product segment recorded Rs 1.55 lakh crore (38 per cent of GMV).
The growth in the services sector has been particularly noteworthy, with a near 100 per cent increase over the corresponding period last year.
"With an emphasis on expansion of bouquet of services offerings on GeM, 19 new service categories have been introduced on the portal in FY 24-25," the Commerce Ministry said in a release.
Central government entities have been the major drivers of procurement growth on the platform.
The Ministry of Coal emerged as the top buyer, with transactions worth Rs 1.63 lakh crore, including Rs 42,000 crore for handling and transport services.
GeM has expanded its scope beyond basic office supplies like stationery and ration to include high-value and complex items such as advanced technology systems, missile components, and specialised services.
Since its inception, GeM has facilitated 2.59 crore orders with a total GMV of over Rs 11.64 lakh crore.
In this fiscal year alone, the platform processed a record 49,960 orders in a single day, reflecting its growing adoption and efficiency.
The platform now hosts over 1.6 lakh government buyers and more than 22.5 lakh registered sellers and service providers.
This diverse network is expected to drive further efficiencies in public procurement while fostering innovation across various sectors.
"GeM portal’s ability to streamline complex procurement processes, alongside its ability to handle high-volume transactions, has cemented its position as a trusted and indispensable tool for government entities," the ministry said.
