The Jagannath Puri Rath Yatra has commenced today (27 June) in Puri, Odisha.

Lakhs of devotees have gathered to partake in this grand celebration, seeking blessings from Lord Jagannath, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, reported The Times Of India.

The famous festival, usually celebrated in June-July, begins when Lord Jagannath and his two siblings – elder brother Lord Balabhadra and younger sister Devi Subhadra are ready to give darshan to the public in the Chariots and visit their birthplace, Gundicha Temple.

The deities reside at the Gundicha Temple for a week.

Other significant events include Surya Puja, Dwarapala Puja, and Besha Sesha.

The Hindu scriptures assign great religious and spiritual significance to this day. Lord Jagannath emerges from the sanctorum in a chariot to bless the devotees participating in the Rath Yatra, allowing them to glimpse the Lord.He bestows worldly pleasures and spiritual enlightenment upon them.

As per the Bamadev Sanhita, devotees who have a glimpse of the Lord Jagannatha, Lord Sudarshan, Balabhadra, and Subhadra at the Gundicha temple for seven long days attain salvation and directly go to Vaikuntha Dham.
