The government is engaging with X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, regarding instances where its AI chatbot, Grok, responded to users with Hindi slang and abusive language, India Today reported citing sources.

According to the report, the Information and Technology Ministry has raised concerns with X about the chatbot's use of such provocative language and will look into the factors leading to it.

Grok, created by xAI, an AI company founded by Elon Musk in 2023, was rolled out as a competitor to popular AI models such as ChatGPT and Google's Gemini.

"We are talking to them (X) to find out why it is happening and what the issues are. They are engaging with us," government sources were quoted as saying in the India Today report.

Available as a built-in feature on X, Grok has drawn widespread attention from Indian social media users over its responses in unfiltered language and slang when provoked.

The controversy surfaced when a viral X post detailed a user's unexpected exchange with Grok.

In response, Grok surprised the user with an expletive-laden reply and advised them to "chill kar," a Hindi phrase meaning "calm down."

In another instance, AI researcher Riley Goodside recently posted a clip showing Grok in "unhinged" mode.

After repeated interruptions, the chatbot simulated a human scream, hurled insults, and terminated the conversation.

Unlike conventional AI models such as ChatGPT, which are programmed to steer clear of sensitive subjects, Grok's design allows for more unfiltered and unrestricted interactions.
