Mastermind of Haldwani violence Abdul Malik was arrested in New Delhi on Saturday (24 February) by Nainital Police. Earlier, he was subjected to sections 82 and 83 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

Under these sections, the Magistrate proclaims the absconding accused and orders the attachment of the property of the person absconding.

Two weeks ago, Malik was also served a recovery notice of Rs 2.44 crore by Haldwani Municipal Corporation for loss to public property.

The violence in Haldwani erupted earlier this month when an illegal madrassa was demolished by authorities. The demolished madrassa was run by Malik and the protests against demolition were also led by him.

Police Headquarters spokesperson Nilesh Anand Bharne said that DGP Abhinav Kumar announced a reward of Rs 50,000 to the police team who arrested Malik.

SSP (Nainital) Prahlad Meena said that six teams were formed to nab Malik. The teams went to Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Maharashtra and Gujarat and the Delhi team succeeded in arresting him.

Other than Malik, two others, Mohammed Furquan and Mohammed Salim were also arrested as they were named in the FIR. This takes the total number of arrests to 82, according to police.
