Haryana: BJP Crushes Congress' Hopes, Set For Unprecedented Third Term

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has defied the exit polls and is set to secure an unprecedented third term in Haryana, dashing the hopes of Congress.
Haryana, which went to polls in a single phase on 5 October, has 90 Assembly seats, making 46 the majority mark.
According to the latest Election Commission data, the BJP has crossed the majority mark of 46 seats in the 90-member Haryana Assembly.
BJP is currently leading on 49 seats in Haryana, while the Congress is trailing with leads on 35 seats, as per the latest official trends.
The independent candidates are leading on four seats, while both the INLD and BSP have leads on one seat each.
If the ongoing trends persist, this will be an unprecedented victory for the BJP as it will become the only party to have secured a third term in the government.
The BJP's victory will also gain significance in light of the fact that the party was reportedly facing massive anti-incumbency after ten years of its rule.
On the other hand, the hopes of Congress, which was confident of an easy victory in Haryana, have been dashed as the party is out of power in the state even after ten years.
In 2014, the BJP won 47 seats and formed the government on its own. In 2019, it formed an alliance with the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) as it fell short of majority with 40 seats.
