Weeks before the Lok Sabha elections, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has taunted AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal, suggesting that if the Dhubri MP plans to marry again, he should do so before the polls or risk arrest.

Sarma has stated that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will be enforced in Assam after the elections, making polygamy illegal as per a report by NDTV.

Ajmal, contesting from Dhubri again, recently stated, "People in the Congress and Rakibul Hussain (his Congress opponent in the seat) said that I have become old. But I still have so much strength that I can get married. I can do so even if the chief minister doesn't want me to, that's how much strength I have."

Speaking at a rally, Sarma remarked, "He (Badruddin Ajmal) should marry now. After the elections, the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will be implemented in Assam. If he marries after that, he will be arrested."

A Uniform Civil Code entails a common set of laws applicable to all Indian citizens, not based on religion, covering matters like marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption.

Sarma has reiterated his government's intent to introduce legislation on a Uniform Civil Code, particularly after the Uttarakhand Assembly passed a UCC bill last month.

Assam is set to vote in the Lok Sabha polls in three phases - on 19, 26 April, and 7 May, with results announced on 4 June.
