Hombale Films Urges Fans to Stop Imitating Daivaradhane Deities After Kantara Controversy

Hombale Films issued a statement today emphasising the profound cultural significance of Daivaradhane, a revered spiritual tradition from the Tulunadu region.

The production house highlighted how this ancient practice embodies deep religious and communal values, urging fans to honour its sanctity. "Daivaradhane is not merely a performance but a sacred ritual that connects communities with their divine guardians," the statement noted.

It called for greater awareness to preserve the tradition's authenticity, especially in light of recent events surrounding their latest blockbuster.

The move comes amid growing controversy over fans dressing as Daivaradhane deities during screenings of Kantara: Chapter 1, the epic prequel that has already grossed over ₹335 crore worldwide in its opening days.

Viral videos have captured enthusiasts mimicking divine possession scenes inside theatres, with some donning elaborate costumes to replicate the film's dramatic depictions. These acts have ignited debates on cultural sensitivity, as critics argue they trivialise a deeply spiritual practice rooted in Tulu folklore and devotion.

In their statement, Hombale Films directly addressed the issue, stating: "Such acts amount to trivialising our belief system and deeply hurt the religious sentiments and faith of the Tulu community. "

Actor-director Rishab Shetty, star of Kantara: Chapter 1, also echoed these sentiments, urging fans to refrain from such behaviour. "It hurts our sentiments," he said, adding that the portrayals in the film serve a cinematic purpose to educate and entertain, not to encourage mockery.

The controversy has spread across social media, with incidents reported in theatres in Tamil Nadu and Bengaluru, where fans have entered screenings dressed as Daiva figures, prompting mixed reactions from admiration to outright condemnation.

As the film continues to dominate box offices, Hombale Films reiterated their commitment to promoting cultural heritage responsibly.

"Our intention is to celebrate and preserve Daivaradhane's legacy through storytelling," the statement concluded.
