Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leaders Kalvakuntla Kavitha and Harish Rao were placed under house arrest on Friday (6 December) to prevent their participation in a planned protest at the Ambedkar statue near near Hyderabad’s Necklace Road.
The demonstration was organised by BRS to protest against the arrest of party leaders, including Rao and Kaushik Reddy.
Kavitha’s Public Relations Officer confirmed that she was put under house arrest before she could attend the protest.
Similarly, Harish Rao’s PRO reported significant police presence restricting his movements.
Reacting to the situation, Priyanka Chaturvedi, Member of Parliament from Shiv Sena (UBT), emphasised the opposition’s democratic right to protest.
She stated, “Law and Order is Supreme, however opposition has every right to protest against anything which they feel goes against the interest of democracy, constitution (or) the people of the state of which they are a part of.”
Following his release, Rao condemned the arrest, calling it unlawful and demanding immediate station bail for Reddy.
“BRS MLA Kaushik Reddy was arrested during the early hours today...He has not been produced in court neither station bail has been granted to him...He should be given immediate station bail...We condemn this arrest,” Harish Rao was quoted as saying by ANI.
Rao also criticised Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, accusing him of running a "demonic rule" under the guise of democracy.
BRS leaders allege that Kaushik Reddy was arrested for filing a complaint at Banjara Hills Police Station accusing CM Revanth Reddy and Intelligence Chief Shivdhar Reddy of wiretapping opposition leaders’ phones.
