The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) has secured state government approval for the construction of an overhead sky cable car linking the Qutb Shahi Tombs and Golconda Fort, according to a Hans India report.

The long-pending project, first cleared by the Tourism Department in 2021, is aimed at boosting tourism in the city’s historic precinct.

According to HMDA officials, the 1.5 km ropeway will be executed on a public-private partnership (PPP) basis, easing the financial burden on the authority.

A feasibility study has already been commissioned to real estate consultancy Knight Frank, which has been tasked with preparing a detailed report within three to four months.

The study will assess land use, resource requirements and right-of-way concerns. A detailed project report (DPR) will follow.

Once operational, the cable car is expected to cut down travel time between the two heritage sites to just 5–10 minutes, compared to the current 15–20 minutes by road during peak traffic hours.

Officials noted that, unlike ropeways in Udaipur, Shimla, Darjeeling, Nalanda or Mussoorie which traverse steep mountain terrain, the Golconda–Tombs line will operate at a lower height.

Once completed within two years, the project will significantly increase tourist footfall at both sites, HMDA officials said.
