Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday called upon fellow countrymen to wholeheartedly embrace the spirit of Vocal for Local, urging that buying Indian-made products should become a way of life.
Addressing a public rally in Delhi after inaugurating a series of highway projects, the Prime Minister emphasised the adoption of Indian made products over the foreign ones.
This comes as Trump administration in US have imposed steep 50 per cent tariffs on Indian goods after New Delhi refused to bow down to US demand for market access in India's dairy and agriculture sector.
Underscoring India’s cultural and civilisational strength, PM Modi said the nation’s philosophy of life embodies both Chakradhari Mohan and Charkhadhari Mohan.
He explained that while Lord Shri Krishna symbolized strength through the Sudarshan Chakra, Mahatma Gandhi awakened the nation’s self-reliance through the spinning wheel.
“To empower India, we must draw inspiration from Chakradhari Mohan, and to make India self-reliant, we must follow the path of Charkhadhari Mohan,” he said.
Recounting India’s journey towards self-reliance, the Prime Minister highlighted the revival of Khadi, which was once on the verge of extinction but has now seen sales increase sevenfold in the last decade.
He noted that the people of India embraced Khadi with pride, turning it into a symbol of Vocal for Local.
PM Modi also pointed to the transformation in the mobile phone sector, noting that “Eleven years ago, India imported most of its mobile phones. Today, the majority of Indians use Made in India phones, and India now manufactures and exports 30 to 35 crore mobile phones annually.”
He further underlined India’s success with UPI, describing it as the world’s largest real-time digital payment platform, and cited the growing global demand for Indian-made rail coaches and locomotives.
PM Modi said when Indians resolved to embrace “Vocal for Local,” not only did domestic toy production increase significantly, but India also began exporting toys to over 100 countries worldwide.
As the festive season approaches, the Prime Minister encouraged everyone to share the joy of local products with their loved ones.
He called upon citizens to make a conscious decision to gift only those items that are made in India and crafted by Indians.
“If you are Indian, buy what is made in India," PM Modi appealed.
Addressing shopkeepers across the country, PM Modi acknowledged that some of them may have sold foreign-made goods in pursuit of slightly higher profits, clarifying that they had done nothing wrong.
However, he urged them to now embrace the mantra of Vocal for Local.
He emphasised that this single step would benefit the nation, as every item sold would support an Indian labourer or a poor citizen.
Highlighting that the money from each sale would remain within India and strengthen the purchasing power of fellow citizens, PM Modi appealed to shopkeepers to sell Made in India products with pride.
