After outrage over a flyer for a workshop on 'South Asian Capitalism', the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay, has retracted its name from the event and asked the organisers to take down the flyer from all social media platforms.
The flyer, showcasing a pyramid of capitalist structure, showed images of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath with a sub-heading, "We fool you."
After being brought to the notice by Harshil Mehta, the flyer received widespread outrage across social media platforms, with people questioning why an institute like IIT Bombay is involved in such events.
In response, IIT Bombay clarified, "This workshop is to be held at University of Berkeley in partnership with UC Berkeley and University of Massachusetts-Amherst for young scholars. IIT Bombay has a project related to New Political Economic Initiative."
"The details of the programme have been removed from the website of New Political Economy Initiative with immediate effect. No one from IIT Bombay is attending the conference. The Institute was not at all consulted about the flyer. We are deeply shocked and upset by its content," it added.
"The Institute will cease to associate with these faculty members from UC Berkeley and University of Massachusetts-Amherst going forward. Further investigation into the matter will be conducted," the institute's X post concluded.
However, a bizarre thing happened that IIT Bombay's social media handle blocked Harshil Mehta on X, who has been continuously questioning the institute's involvement in events that do not align with its academic goal.
